AN extraordinary meeting is to be convened to discuss how a council can make positive environmental changes.

On April 18, at the Parkhouse Centre, Bude-Stratton Town Council will deliberate on the 29 recommendations made by the ‘Bude Area Community Jury on Climate Change’.

The community jury, organised by Bude Climate Partnership, took place in autumn 2023. It was made up of 34 people from across the wider Bude area, to examine the implications of sea level rise and its local impact.

The jury’s recommendations were formed after more than 1,000 hours of debate and expert insight.

A Bude Climate Partnership spokesperson said: “The recommendations recognise that difficult decisions need to be taken about how we, as a community, respond to climate change, and particularly sea level rise. We need to prioritise what action can be taken, and when, to protect vital infrastructure, facilities and natural features.

“With such big challenges ahead, it’s really important we work collectively to respond and adapt. We are a coastal community which relies heavily on tourism and the beaches, so there is understandably a lot of community interest in how we meet the challenge of sea level rise and coastal erosion.

“This meeting provides a real opportunity for the work of the community jury to be looked at in further detail, and to discuss the next steps to be taken to protect Bude’s future.”
