Larger entry and more interest shown for all weights. Overall average of 360.3ppk and more could have been sold. Top per kilo being 375ppk for two pens of 40kgs £150 from the Stephen Family, Burscott, Holsworthy.

Mike Watkins, Lower Hollam Farm, Torrington saw his three pens of 42kgs realise 373ppk £156.50. Sam Vickery, Killock Farm, Kilkhampton had two pens of Charolais x 42kgs which made 371ppk £156.50.

Graham Down, Higher Bickington saw his two pens of 43.2kgs make 369ppk £159.50. Top per head was £160 for two pens of 45kgs from Geoffrey & Simon Grigg, Weach Barton, Bideford.

300 Hoggs

The hoggs have started to dry up with a lot of producers tidying up. Top per kilo being 311ppk for 46kgs £143 from Kevin Heard, Bradworthy. Top per head being £151 from Graham & Linda Cowling, Bude for 50kgs Texel x.

Draft Ewes

Larger entry and still a strong trade and a lot more were needed to fulfil buyers orders. Several pens of Suffolk around £180 to a top of £190 from Nigel Dufty, Bratton Clovelly. Charollais x ewes to £184 from Murrin & Son, Monkokehampton. Texel ewes to £180 from Mrs Forfitt, Shebbear. Mules to £165.

Couples 54E & 68L

A very fast trade. Top Doubles reaching £370 for Suffolk x 2T from Henry Banbury, Iddesleigh, who also topped the hogg Singles at £300 for Suffolk x and North Country mule. Suffolk x FM Singles to £275 from Jim & Spencer Dennis, Hartland.

Next Wednesday 14th May Holsworthy Market Annual Show & Sale of Couples for Bradworthy YFC being 45 Suffolk x Double & Single Couples. Also a consignment of 40 North Country mules and Suffolk x hogg couples all off two local farms.

298 Calves & Weaned Calves

Nearly 300 calves entered and trade slightly easier for the first quality however the second and third quality looking an unbelievable trade, with some small native heifers going out the ring at over 300 looking a mega price.

Only a handful forward selling to £710 for a bundle of Hereford heifers in from L & S Martin of Monkleigh.

A lovely run of Charolais bulls sold to £685, £680, £668, £660, £652, £648, £645 and £632 all around a month old presented by LJ Goaman & Son, other Charolais bulls selling to £670 for JH & SM Dark & Sons travelling up from Helston.

Best Simmental bulls to £620 for RWH Dilling who also made £620 for their outstanding Hereford bulls. Other Hereford bulls selling very well to £575 for Messrs Hannah & Co of St Cleer, £535 for CH Furse & Son again and £522 for Steve Furse again.

Aberdeen Angus bulls another wonderful trade with 17 averaging £443, topping at £570 for LJ & LE Luxton & Son, Holsworthy, £535, £520 for LJ Goaman & Sons again, £510 for TWP Uglow, Launceston £502 for two different vendors JH & SM Dark & Sons again and DAN & JM Parkhouse, St Austell.

Limousin bulls to £510 for S Baker & Son, Lewdown, £465 for NJ & KA Bowden, Highampton, £428 and £422 for MJ & J Vickery, Kilkhampton. Fewer Friesian bulls around today topping at £375 for an older calf for RA JF RH Poole, Milton Damerel, more for £200 (x4) for M & M Andrew & Sons, Black Torrington, £180 for LJ Goaman & Sons again and £170 for TJ Boughton & Son, Bradworthy.

110 Store Cattle

Numbers were tight this week and despite the finish price easing slightly the forward stores saw an improved trade yet again.

Top on the day was £2310 for a 20mth Hereford steer from Messrs H & M Thorne, Umberleigh, who sold 19mth Limousins £2280 and British Blues to £2140. Two 17mth Simmental steers from Mr FR Bown, Okehampton raced away to £2200.

Aberdeen Angus steers from Messrs WJ Wooldridge & Son, Putford topped at £2080 (21mths), others £1900 and Herefords from the same farm stable £1910. Heifers with frame and flesh in demand. Five 17mth long Charolais from Messrs T & S Battams, Holsworthy topped at £1920, others £1840.

Native heifers to £1870 for two at 20mths from Messrs WJ Wooldridge & Son, Putford £1870. Holstein steers from Mr R Bridgman, Clawton saw the best feeding types to £1510. Grazing Holsteins to £980.

Younger Store Cattle

No easier this week with demand still strong. A nice run of 13mth British Blue steers from Mr D Walter, Stratton saw a top call of £1680 (x3), others £150 (x6) and £1440 (x6). British Blues from Messrs CR & CF Timms & Son, Okehampton saw four 13mth Hereford steers £1320 (x4), Hereford heifers £1140 (x4).

British Blue heifers from the same farm £1230, others to £1220 for two from Mr DW Ridd, West Buckland. 12mth Charolais steers from Messrs T & S Battams, Holsworthy £1050 and Aberdeen Angus to £1040.

Finished Cattle

Top this week was 330ppk for a handyweight non FA Simmental heifer from Mr WM Bridgman, Jacobstow.

25 Dairy Cattle

The small entry for today’s sale met a steady trade with the perfect harvesting weather resulting in a quieter sale ring than in recent weeks with many bidders joining via Marteye.

Topping the fresh milk at £2,300 was a freshly calved cow ‘Stlawrence Command Elma’ yielding 45kg and sold on behalf of Heywood Farm Partners Ltd of Chulmleigh. A small consignment of staler, autumn calving cows, not back in calf, sold on behalf of TJ & ID Bray of Bridgerule averaged £1875, topping at £2250 for ‘Hackthorne Striker Beechnut’ a second calver yielding 28kg.

A very smart, well-bred pedigree Aberdeen Angus bull ‘Atlantic Eenymeenyminymo Y610’ sold on behalf of HJ, SA & J Wonnacott and achieved £3550. Nick & Kate Bowden of Highampton sold a single heifer calf, reaching £80
