TORRIDGE CUP FINAL AT TORRINGTON AFC

Holsworthy 0 Torrington 2

HOLSWORTHY were beaten in the Torridge Cup final for the second successive year last night as host club Torrington won 2-0 at Vicarage Field.

First half goals from Tom Davey and George Nancekivell were enough to decide the contest as the Magpies, who lost 2-1 to Appledore 12 months ago, were left to lick their wounds ahead of a remarkable schedule which sees them play three times in the next four days.

Tonight they welcome Newquay in SWPL Premier West (7.45pm) before Wendron United arrive tomorrow (3pm).

After a 24-hour break they finish their season by welcoming Wadebridge Town on Bank Holiday Monday (2pm).

In front of a huge crowd of 652 which was stationed around all four sides of the pitch, and the Magpies still feeling the effects of their congested schedule, Torrington scored after just four minutes.

A cross in along the six-yard box saw goalkeeper Ryan Chadwick wait for the ball to come in towards him, but striker Tom Davey got there first to poke it into the net.

The Super Greens were now buoyant and looked to extend their lead.

The second goal arrived midway through the half as the usually ultra-consistent Chadwick let George Nancekivell’s shot from distance creep under him and inside the far post.

Holsworthy looked threatening when they got the ball down and played, but too often they would get into the final third and take the wrong option.

The second half was a scrappy affair but the Magpies were left frustrated when following a foul, Jay Thomas’ shot was tipped on to the post for Sam Jago to slot in. However, the referee awarded the free-kick on the edge of the box.

But besides that they could have few complaints as Torrington celebrated on their own patch.
