BRIGHT Sparks, the children’s music and drama club based in Week St Mary, entertained audiences with a varied programme of song, dance, acting, instrumental solos, magic and comedy.

In a show conceived and directed by Hilary Daniel, the children also performed numbers with parents and grandparents and were accompanied throughout by a live band.

The show opened with a group song called ‘Name that Toon’, showcasing a vast range of cartoon theme songs in quick-fire succession. Individual and across-the-generations duets song and dance routines came from shows as varied as the Sound of Music, Men in Black, The Wizard of Oz, Beauty and the Beast and Annie. Father and daughter team, The Morrisons, played guitar duets, including numbers by the Shadows.

Magicians, The Marvellous Mysterioso and Hermoine Granger, captivated the audience with logic-defying illusions, including Mysteriosa sawing Hermoine in half, only to produce her whole again from her cabinet.

Club musical director, Hilary Daniel, said: “We have produced this show mainly since Christmas. I was delighted with the quality of the performance. The variety show was an opportunity for children who had not had main parts before, to progress and perform individually. They delivered and engaged with audience with confidence and verve.”

Bright Sparks began as a music and drama club two years ago. It meets and operates weekly within Week St Mary Methodist Church.

Another club leader, Jeremy Ward, added: “Our aim is to enable children to learn important life skills. Yes, we improve our youngsters’ music and drama skills, but we also want to ensure they increase their confidence in performance in front of an audience and understand the importance of planning, preparation and rehearsing — added to which we have great fun. This shone through the wonderful performances of Bugsy and In the Jungle.”
