A FAMILY from Launceston has returned from an unforgettable three-week trip to Australia, where 20-year-old Nicole Armstrong, who has Down syndrome, participated in the World Down Syndrome Congress in Brisbane.
Nicole, along with her parents Jane and Mike, and her older brother Joseph, spent the trip reconnecting with relatives and exploring iconic destinations.
Their journey down under began in Melbourne, where the family visited Mike’s relatives for the first time in 30 years.
Reflecting on the family reunion, Jane said: “It was such a special moment for all of us. Reuniting with family after all this time made the trip even more meaningful.”
From Melbourne, they travelled to Brisbane for the congress, an international event that brings together individuals with Down syndrome, their families, and professionals from around the world.
Nicole attended the congress independently one day, spending the time making new friends and engaging in activities. One of the key tasks was to reflect on personal values, and Nicole chose "respect, independence, and eventually having her own home" as the most important things to her.
Speaking about her experience, she said: “I loved meeting new people at the congress. It was great being there on my own and learning so much.”
The highlight of Nicole’s trip, however, was spending time with her brother Joseph, who no longer lives at home, as well as visiting a koala sanctuary.
She said: “Spending time with Joseph was amazing, and the koalas were so cute.”
On their way back to the UK, the family enjoyed a brief stopover in Singapore, where they experienced a taste of luxury with a visit to the iconic Raffles Hotel, sipping Singapore Slings to mark the end of their adventure.
Back in Plymouth, Nicole is looking forward to celebrating her 21st birthday with friends old and new. She spends two days a week at Plymouth Day Opportunities, where she enjoys spending time with friends, doing arts and crafts, and going out for coffee or lunch.
Christine Jones, team leader at Plymouth Day Opportunities, added: “Nicole’s confidence and independence have really shone through after her trip. We’re all looking forward to celebrating her 21st birthday with her.”
