814 Prime Sheep 159 Draft Ewes and Rams

Good entry of hoggs met a similar trade, with again a lot of heavies on offer which met a stand on trade from last week. The fleshed medium weights met a stronger trade.

Top being 325ppk for a pen of 42kgs £136.50 from Terry O’Reily, Rectory Farm, Halwill and 318ppk for 46kgs £146.50 from S May, Week St Mary. Rob Johns, West Ville, Bradworthy saw his 36.6kgs realise 318ppk £116.50.

Heavies topped the day at £156.50 from two vendors, WJ Crocker & Sons, Colehouse, Merton and Rob Walter, Putshole Farm, Hartland.

102 New Season Lambs

Larger entry with the lighter lambs 38kgs to 42kgs very much sought after and selling to a premium. Top per kilo being 387ppk for 41kgs £158.50 from FG Knapman & Co, North Tawton.

379ppk met by RJ Watkins, Lower Hollam, Torrington for 42kgs £159. G Grigg, Weach Barton Farm, Bideford sold four pens of 42kgs to achieve 376ppk £158.

Draft Ewes

Similar entry and again a very fast trade and more could have been sold.

Suffolk x ewes to £227 from Rod Evely, Woolaton, Petersmarland. Texel x ewes to £210 and Mules to £198 from Nigel Dufty, Bratton Clovelly. Polled Dorset ewes to £186.

Couples 55 Ewes and 82 Lambs

A similar entry of couples met a very fast trade.

Doubles topped at £398 for Texel x from P Dack, Parkham, who also had a trebel realise £390. Singles topped at £242 for a Dorset x from JA Ayre, Torrington.

341 Calves

Still strong numbers considering the huge influx of calves seen here last week.

341 calves penned and sold to a stronger trade with some calves up £60 per head on last weeks market.

Weaned Calves

A small selection on offer and a steadier trade. Top was £840 for a smart red Limousin steer in from Andrew Hockridge, Bideford, followed by £770 for a sweet Charolais heifer in from Geoff Bond who sold a further bunch to £640.

Aberdeen Angus steers to £615 from MJ Taylor, Ilfracombe, followed by Angus bulls at £610 for JG & SJ Tancock of Kelly Bray, Callington.

Milk Calves

Top of the section was £800 given for a very smart Inrax 95 bull in from Adam Wickett, Merton, followed by Charolais bulls reaching a huge £790 from D Philps & Son, Looe who sold others to £750, £745, £720 and £690.

Other Charolais bulls £730, £705 (x2) and £700 all in from LJ Goaman & Sons, Hartland and more to £720 Geoff Bond, Stibb Cross.

British Blue bulls an incredible trade soaring to £770 for a stonking sort in from Andrew Hockridge, Bideford, others £650 Dave & Diane Furse, Ashwater, £740 Kingsley Care, St Austell, £628 Geoff Endacott, Halwill, £600 MJ Hopper, Whitstone, £580 J Sillifant, Pancrasweek and £570 for Chris Tucker, Truro.

48 British Blue bulls averaged £462 up £40 on the week. Only 2 Limousin bulls on offer which sold to £750 for PH Collins, Holsworthy and £660 O Copplestone, Pyworthy.

Aberdeen Angus bulls another grand trade reaching £630 for Ollie Copplestone, Pyworthy, more to £550 for RW Finnimore, Congdon Shop, £542 for TJ Boughton & Son, Bradworthy and £492 Brian Thomas down from Umberleigh with pen after pen of Aberdeen Angus bulls over £400.

Hereford bulls in strong demand soaring to £525 for a young type in from R & M Barrow, Torrington, £495 Colwill & Bellairs, Morwenstow and £460 for 2 vendors being Fred Francis, East Putford and Nick & Kate Bowden, Highampton. Longhorn bulls averaged £387 for all forward to a top of £440 for JL Bartlett, Swimbridge. Followed by Devon bulls to £395 for a nice pair down from Whiddon Down for JR & A Down.

Heifers achieving some head turning prices with Adam Wickett back in again, topping this section at £740 for a very smart Inrax 95. Charolais heifers following suit at £650, £625 and £590 for D Philp & Sons, £580 J Sillifant, £560, £555, £535 and £515 for LJ Goaman & Sons.

British Blue heifers to £610 from Colwill & Bellairs, £550 for D Philp and JA Bartlett and to £542 Andrew & Mark Kempthorne, Trewalder, £540 for Kingsley Care with 57 British Blue heifers averaging £414. Aberdeen Angus heifers very well in demand topping at £505 Ollie Copplestone, £460 for JR & A Down, £398 LJ Goaman & Sons, £388 RW Finnimore, £370 Brian Thomas, £365, £355, £350 Peter and Jason Blake, Torpoint.

A nice show of Limousin heifers sold well at £505, £492, £450 for EJ Pincombe, Winkleigh, with all Limousin heifers averaging £411. Hereford heifers £460 and £400 for Colwill & Bellairs and £362 for Andrew Oke, Bradford, plenty of Hereford heifers over £250.

Diary Sired Bulls

A good offering with the older Friesian bulls selling well however the younger sorts harder to place, top at £360 for a pair of older sorts in from Brian Thomas again, others to £340 for TJ Boughton & Son and £335 for PJ Wickett & Son, Kilkhampton with 24 Friesian bulls averaging £145.

A pairs of cross bred dairy bulls sold well at £230 from Rachel Poole, Putford.

220 Store Cattle

Another phenomenal trade this week for both young and old stores, with the overall average of £1628 for steers and heifers £1471.

Top of the older section was £2630 for two 23mth British Blues from Messrs NT, AE & MT Gear, Newton Tracey. Other British Blues from Mr SO Metherell, Welcombe £2490. Again from Messrs NT, AE & MT Gear, Newton Tracey British Blues £2470.

Younger 19-20mth British Blues from Messrs D & E Kirk, Ashwater £2370 and £2320 (x6) and four 18mth British Blues from Messrs H & M Thorne, Umberleigh £2180 (x4). Others from Messrs AW Pomeroy & Son, Great Dinworthy, Bradworthy £2030. Best of the Natives topped at £2560 for a 23mth non FA Devon x steer from Mr J Norman, Dolton.

20mth Aberdeen Angus rig from Brightley Farms, Umberleigh £2200 and two Aberdeen Angus at 20mths from Messrs G & G Heal, Umberleigh £2100. A tremendous heifer trade. Best of the fleshed British Blues £2360 (x2). Messrs NT, AE & MT Gear, Newton Tracey who sold four others at £2100.

A single store condition British Blue heifer from Mr BJ Yelland, Holsworthy £2080. Other notable prices £1880 (x3), £1870 (x5) and £1790 (x3). More required. Charolais heifers from Messrs AN & JA Guy, West Putford £1770.

Native heifers topped at £2050 for two warm Herefords from Messrs NT, AE & MT Gear, Newton Tracey £2050. Aberdeen Angus to £1980 for a 18mth heifer from Messrs AW Pomeroy & Son, Great Dinworthy, Bradworthy. Holstiens from JA & RS Mills, Petersmarland saw steers to £1400, heifers to £1900 for three at 26mths.

120 Younger Stores

A cracking run of quality consignments with a large crowd of buyers around the ring.

Top on the day was £1890 for a cracking 13mth Hereford from Messrs JA & RS Mills, Petersmarland, who sold 11mth British Blues at £1740 and 11mth British Blue heifers £1480.

Other British Blues from Messrs C Brooking, Northlew £1560 and £1460. Limousins and Aberdeen Angus 13mths £1420 and 13mth Limousin heifers £1480. Another good run from Messrs CR & CF Timms & Son, Inwardleigh British Blue steers £1320, British Blue heifers £1310, Hereford steers 12mths £1320.

Organics from Messrs WGA Hunkin, Frithelstock saw Devon steers £1750, 15mth heifers to £1500. A real line up of well farmed well presented 7mth British Blue, Aberdeen Angus and Fleckvieh steers and heifers from AM & H Vanstone, Broadwoodkelly saw an overall average of £1110.

Fleckvieh steers to £1420 (x10), British Blue steers 7mths to £1320 (x3), Aberdeen Angus steers £1030 (x7), British Blue heifers to £1180 (x4) and Aberdeen Angus heifers to £920. A further consignment of 50 Fleckvieh steers 7-8mths from Messrs AM & H Vanstone, Broadwoodkelly next week at Holsworthy.

309ppk was the top for a non FA 7 year old Charolais cow from Mr A Parkhouse, Barnstaple realising £2150. Herefords from the same farm to 270ppk.
