873 Prime Sheep 160 Draft Ewes and Rams
Much larger entry and on the day a lot of heavy hoggs weighing 52kilos and over, which has been seen throughout the country this week and have been a lot harder to sell.
The handy weight fleshed hoggs sold to a top of 354ppk for a pen of lights from L Williams, Eastdown, Beaworthy. 339ppk was realised by Mervin Uglow, Sunnybank, Whitstone for a pen of 44kgs £149.
Five vendors saw their hoggs make 338ppk, with several pens of heavies £157 and over to a top of £160 for two vendors, Steve Cottle, Upcott Farm, Welcombe and Orleigh Farms, Bideford.
Draft Ewes
More on offer and again a flying trade for all on offer.
Overall average of £138.50. Pen after pen £170 and over to a top of £193 for Texel x Mules from Richard Pillman, Crabbe Farm, Poughill. Suffolk x to £189 from three vendors. Continental x ewes to £186 from Sam Vickery, Killock Farm, Kilkhampton. Mules to £168 and Polled Dorset ewes to £174.
Couples 40E and 54L
Similar entry of couples and again a very strong trade. Doubles to £345 for a Texel x from Danny Norman, Dolton and Singles to £230 from three vendors.
381 Calves
Good numbers around with many of those smaller spring born calves forward which sold to an unbelievable trade.
Some native x calves making £100 more than vendors expectations. Many farmer buyers out in force trying to re-stock their sheds creating a fierce trade.
Weaned Calves
A super show of weaned calves which sold to another wonderful trade and soared away to a huge £920 (only 6 months old) for a superb bunch of British Blue steers presented by Handsford Farm Partners of North Tawton who sold a pair at £905 (6m).
British Blue heifers off the same good holding reached £855 (6m) for a smart pair. Aberdeen Angus steers to £905 for Handsford Farm Partnership again. Aberdeen Angus bulls made £740 (6m) in from Yeo Vale farm, Bideford.
Milk Calves
Some colossal returns seen today with the best of the rearing calves reaching a serious £780 for a British Blue bulls for TA & SJ Kempthorne, Helstone, £755 for O Petherick & Son, Kilkhampton, two to £730 for Messrs Kempthorne again and £695 for O Petherick again.
Simmental bulls to £710 for GG Smale & Son, Launceston. Limousin bulls to £680, £620 for PH Collins Partnership, Holsworthy, more to £620 (x2) and £600 for O Copplestone, Pyworthy.
Hereford bulls to £640 for O Petherick again, £520, £510, £492 for IM Mitchell, St Winnow and £470 for Harvey Bros, Launceston. Aberdeen Angus bulls to £620 for SEJ Tapp & Son, Tiverton, £535 for RAS Johns & Partners, Shebbear, more for SEJ Tapp to £522 and £500.
Charolais bulls to £585, £580 (x2) for RG & LA & SR Wearing, Tavistock and £460 for SR Gilbert & Son, Sheepwash. British Blue heifers to £650, £630 for O Petherick & Son, £500 for WD Medland again, £488 for RG & LA & SR Wearing again and £472 for RWH Dilling, Highampton.

Limousin heifers to £600 for Coppplestone again, £480, £472 (x2), £470 B & N Davey, Boyton and £460 for Westcott Farm Partnership, Holsworthy. Hereford heifers to £420 for IM Mitchell, St Winnow, £350 for FJ & DG Francis, East Putford, £350 twice for R & S Home again and JR Bucknell, South Molton.
Aberdeen Angus heifer heifers to £400 for LJ & LE Luxton, Milton Damerel, £395 for LD Heywood Ltd, Hartland, £380 for R & S Home again and £370 for WD Medland. Charolais heifers to £345, £342 and £320 for SR Gilbert & Son again. Devon heifers to £310 and £300 for IM Mitchell again.
Friesian Bulls
Part reared Friesian bulls to a huge £380 for LD Heywood Ltd, Hartland, £340 for WD Medland again, with younger Friesians between £90-£158.
280 Store Cattle
Another decent entry this week, with a much larger number of younger stores on offer.
Top on the day was a 19mth Aberdeen Angus steer to £2280 from Messrs H & M Thorne, Umberleigh. Four other 19mth Aberdeen Angus steers from Messrs WJ Wooldridge & Son, East Putford, who sold 19mth Herefords well at £1890.
Top of the Continentals was £2240 for four 26mth steers from Messrs RL Heard & Son, Hartland. Other 21mth British Blues from Messrs CT Banbury & Son, Broadwood £2180 and £2020 and Limousins from the same farm £2040. Three cracking 20mth Charolais from Mr AS May, Week St Mary £2240.
Other younger wintering Continental and Native steers £1700+. Holstein steers in short supply, £1710 the top for a 26mth steer from Messrs P & J Pengilly & Sons, Hartland. Three other 21mth steers from Mr JM May, Whitstone £1590, others £1560.
Younger stores
An impressive entry penned with another large crowd of buyers bidding hard.
A cracking run of 11mth single suckled Herefords from Messrs SI & AM Barkwill, Tavistock topped at £1640, others £1460 (4), with heifers to £1365 10mth. Another run of single suckled Herefords from Mr CJ Wooldridge, Broadbury topped at £1590 (4), others £1525 (3).
Another excellent consignment of Dairy x steers and heifers from Messrs PJ & SJ Hawking, Beaworthy saw 11mth Aberdeen Angus steers £1480 (3), others £1320 (7) and £1300 (7). Limousins from the same farm £1340, whose eight 11mth British Blue heifers sold well at £1200.
10mth single suckled Charolais from Mr J Congdon, Saltash hit £1400. Young 9mth Blonde steers from Messrs Hutton Bros, Hatherleigh sold well at £1200 and heifers to £1960. Young 5-6mth cross bred steers from C & F Street Partnership, Ilfracombe saw British Blues to £780. Herefords also selling well at £710.
Grazing Cows
A limited entry topped at £1360 for a young Simmental cow from Mr PM Piper, Holsworthy. Other South Devon cows from the same farm £1300.
OTM Weighing Cows
190ppk top this week for a Dexter cow weighing 524kilos from J Peen, Hollacombe.
58 Dairy Cattle
An additional dairy market saw a slightly easier trade than recent weeks.
Topping the sale at £2600 was a 2nd calving cow ‘Cabbacott Harley P Venus’ yielding 40Kgs on behalf of Mr John George of Bideford with another 2nd calving cow from the same vendor selling to £2250. Steve Davey & Partners sold a 2nd calving cow ‘Westtown Monique 13’ yielding 44Kgs at £2550 with another 2nd calver ‘Westtown Annabelle 220’ realising £2300.
The Hugo Family of Bodmin continued their dispersal topping at £2450 for a 3rd calving cow. A limited entry of heifers saw a top of £2400 for Messrs SFB Agricultural Services of Buckland Brewer with Messrs AC Withecombe & Son of Bideford topping at £2300 for a heifer yielding 46Kgs.
The sale saw the final consignment from the Herd Dispersal on behalf of Mr WHA Hicks of Falmouth which topped at £1520 for a dry cow due in May to Hereford. Messrs SED Rail & Son of Launceston also continued their Herd Dispersal with a super run of British Friesian In Calf Heifers due mid-April onwards.
The consignment topped at £1900 (X3), £1880, £1850, £1820, £1800 with their consignment averaging £1804.
