HOPE remains that the impending withdrawal of services by a national charity could yet be resolved.
Mencap presently offers supported living services to residents of Trecarn Close in Launceston, a row of adapted independent living bungalows for people with additional physical and mental needs under contract to Cornwall Council.
However, in late July, the charity informed parents and other responsible adults for its residents that it would be withdrawing its services in late 2024, leading to uncertainty for those concerned at the Livewest owned bungalows.
When asked for confirmation of the departure by the Post, Mencap confirmed that despite informing Cornwall Council that it was to hand back its contract, it is still in negotiations with the authority to overcome its reasons for withdrawal.
The issue appears to revolve around the amount of funding provided by the authority towards the services provided by the charity, with hopes abound that between Mencap and Cornwall Council, alternative potential funding for the site can be found.
However, the charity warned that if it is not possible, they will do all they can to provide a supportive and smooth transition to an alternative service provider, who would take over the services offered to Trecarn Close’s residents.
Cornwall Council confirmed it was also in ongoing discussions with Mencap, and gave reassurance that in the event of withdrawal by the charity, it would work with residents and their families to continue to receive the care and support they need.
Jackie O'Sullivan, executive director for strategy and Influence at learning disability charity Mencap, said: “Handing back a contract is always a last resort and not a decision we take lightly. However, due to several factors we have had to make the difficult decision to hand back this contract to Cornwall County Council.
“We are now working alongside them to look at alternative potential funding for the site and hope to come to a mutual solution that means we can continue to provide care for the people we support. However, if this isn’t possible, we will do whatever we can together to provide a smooth and supportive transition.
“Mencap will continue to do everything we can to support the families and keep them informed as the situation changes.”
A spokesperson for Cornwall Council added: “We are in ongoing discussions with Mencap about the future of Trecarn Close and are keen to find a solution that means that people can continue to be supported there.
“However, if Mencap decides to withdraw the services they provide we will work with residents and their families to make sure they continue to receive the care and support they need.
