TAKING on a new adventure, a Launceston Explorer Scout flew to Norway on Monday morning, July 22, to begin a two week adventure “North of the Ordinary”, camping by the Fjords of Norway’s beautiful coastline.

Charlotte Lancaster joined seven other Explorers from across Cornwall, selected to represent the county on the exciting International Jamboree. Roverway 2024 is the latest in a joint Guide and Scout European Jamboree, with Charlotte being asked to raise £2,000 towards the costs of the trip of a lifetime.

Charlotte’s efforts have included pet-sitting, homemade cake sales, plant sales (grown from seed), plus generous donations from family and friends wanting to support her trip. She was also delighted to receive generous donations from 1st Launceston Scout group, where her Scouting adventures began.

Reaching her target early, Charlotte was keen to continue the work begun last year by fellow Explorer Arthur Ivey, who travelled to South Korea for the World Jamboree in 2024. Arthur’s target of £4,000 was such a daunting task that Arthur and his family decided to launch a legacy fund to give a boost to future Scouts who might think they can’t manage to raise such a huge amount.

Raising well over his £4,000, Arthur put the surplus into a pot to kick start Charlotte’s funds. Charlotte has now set herself a target to raise an extra £200 minimum for the legacy fund when she returns, to enable the next Scout to get going.

Scout volunteer leader Jess Lancaster told the Post: “Many of our young people say they can’t manage to raise the money. A core Scout value is that Scouting is for all, and finance should never be a bar. We encourage every member to talk to us if they cannot afford an activity – our group ensures that everything is accessible to all Scouts, including World trips.”
