THERE has been a hive of activity this week at a Launceston primary school’s ‘Bee Club’ was awarded funds to further their work.
St Catherine’s C of E Primary School welcomed Olivia Crisp, the community engagement officer from South West Water after it was shortlisted for funding through the organisation’s ‘Neighbourhood Fund’ scheme.
Members of the Bee Club took Olivia on a tour of the grounds, up to the school apiary, showing her the hives from the school’s safe viewing platform within the polytunnel.
They then returned indoors to the warm and completed a small presentation including facts about bees and demonstrating what they have learnt so far, explaining how important the bees are for pollination and the environment.
A spokesperson for the school explained: “Following a short Q&A session, I think it was safe to say that Olivia was blown away by their knowledge and very impressed with what they have learnt so far. So much so that she confirmed on the spot that she could proceed with the funding for us, an impressive total of £1,490!
“This funding will be put towards: replacement hives, microscopes, honey extraction equipment, bee club lanyards, disease treatment, text books, and re-planting in the school garden.
“Our Bee Club members were thrilled to have been successful with their bid for the money and can’t wait to use all of the new equipment that we will now be able to purchase.”
