BODMIN JAIL Hotel plans to create a swimming pool and spa on the Grade II listed site and has asked Cornwall Council for pre-application planning advice.

The spa would be an extension of the Civil Wing to provide facilities for the hotel. It would be located at the end of the Women’s Wing in the former exercise yard in a new structure with a link between old and new. The changing rooms will be in the link and there will be a mezzanine overlooking the pool with a sauna, steam room and spa showers. It is envisaged that the swimming pool will be contained in a new glass and steel structure.

The planning statement said: “Its form is inspired by the tri-arched windows on the gable ends of the Naval and Women’s wings and a modern interpretation of the trefoil arched leisure pavilions of the Victorian era. Those pavilions were conceived as spaces of relaxation and leisure. Those concepts are perfect for our premium hotel brand: Luxury, History, Cornwall.”
