THE seamless conservation of the medieval Gildhouse at Poundstock has won the Conservation award in this year's hotly contested Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) South West Town and Country Design Awards, which were announced at a ceremony in Bristol last week, hosted by chief executive of the UK Green Building Council Paul King.

The project has ensured a sensitive bringing back to life that has enabled the medieval building to fulfil a multitude of community and social uses and continue the tradition of its central role at the heart of the village into the 21st century.

RIBA practice Jonathan Rhind Architects worked with the local authorities on this project to revitalise an historical site.

Jury chair Richard Parnaby said: "The sense of community pride in this subtle and sensitive renovation of the medieval Gildhouse was palpable. The architect's philosophy of 'just enough' shone through with imperceptible and crafted repair merging seamlessly with appropriate and measured new work to accommodate disabled access and facilities."
