A SCOUT group has hosted the grand opening of its new hut after a wait of more than three years.
The 2nd Bude (Jacobstow) Scout Group has finally found itself a new home after it officially opened its new base.
In 2017 the group was given the news the tenancy at Wainhouse Corner where its second hand pre-fabricated Scout hut has stood since 1978 would be coming to an end in 2020. During 2020, and a few months behind schedule due to COVID, the old Scout hut was demolished by volunteers.
Following this, the ball was set in motion to find alternative accommodation. Hoping to help the group, landowners Jonathan and Sally Batchelor gifted a plot of land to the Scouts at Gratton’s Farm, Rosecare, St Gennys.
After many months of legal processes, architect’s drawings, grant applications and fundraising the group were finally ready to start the building of a new Scout hut.
In 2021 a building team was contracted and the ground works and concrete base was completed. It was at this stage a group of volunteers took on the building of the hut, led by the group Scout leader Robert Medland.
The team of volunteers worked tirelessly throughout the three years, to achieve the finished hut and the group are excited to start the new term in September, welcoming Beavers, Cubs and Scouts to their new home.
Jill Cole, club treasurer, said: “During 2021, 2nd Bude (Jacobstow) Scout Group celebrated its 50th year, now with the new hut the future of the group is secure for many more years to come.
“It is with great delight that on a rather wet July 20, 2024 the scout hut was opened by Jonathan and Sally Batchelor, and a celebration was held as a thank you to every business, charity, parish council, volunteers, individuals who donated that made the hut what it is today. Every supporter is now on our supporter’s plaque hung in the entrance area for all to see.
“Thank you to each and everyone of you who has supported our project.”
