Students of St Stephen’s Community Academy in Launceston were treated to a day of music and dance following a visit from the Pearl of Africa Choir. 

St Stephen’s were joined by Werrington Primary School this week as they enjoyed a visit from the Pearl of Africa Choir. 

“What a fantastic way to start the new half term,” said Maura Furber, headteacher at St Stephen’s. The Ugandan choir are currently touring the UK, raising funds for the ‘Send our Friends to School’ program. 

Maura continued: “As a UNICEF Gold Rights Respecting school we know that every child has the right to an education so we were delighted to support this event. 

“Our school value ‘Advocacy’ was very appropriate this week and to show our humanitarian support, the children and staff came to school dressed in all or some of the colours of the Ugandan flag; black, yellow, and red.” 

More than £160 was raised for the charity choir through non-uniform donations. 

“Thank you everyone for your support,” said Maura. “And it was great to see so many of our community at our whole school performance at the end of the day and I know a lot of people also bought some of the beautiful craft items that the charity brought with them. Thanks also to Ms. Gilbert for coordinating this event and the host families for transporting the choir. It was a totally joyful day for us all. Thank you Pearl of Africa.”
