MORRISONS in Bude has made a huge donation of plastic bags to promote the importance of beach cleaning and looking after the environment.

The company, which, nationwide, has announced new measures to cut down on plastic to ensure they are contributing as little to the plastic problem as possible, has donated thousands of single-use plastic bags to the #2minutebeachclean from its Bude store.

This follows on from the news that they no longer offer the 5p single-use plastic bags to customers, instead pledging to provide only reusable bags at their tills.

Members of the local Morsbags group — otherwise known as the ‘Bude Baggers’ — were discussing the plastic bags with the team at Morrisons, when they were told that thousands of plastic bags were just sitting upstairs in the store’s office.

So, with conversations taking place, Morrisons Bude agreed to donate the plastic bags to the #2minutebeachclean cause, which encourages anyone of any age to head over to their nearest beach and spend just a couple minutes of their day picking up any rubbish or debris that shouldn’t be there.

The bags, which were donated to the cause last Thursday, will be used for the #2minutebeach clean boards for beach cleans.

The Bude Baggers are urging people to donate old materials to two drop-off points in the town — Rosie’s Kitchen and Bude TIC.

Unfortunately the group have been unable to make their reusable fabric bags out of some of the materials put into the fabric donation point at Rosie’s, as old clothes are being put in there instead of the usual materials they use.

The group looks for fabrics and materials such as old curtains, duvet covers and pillowcases — they are unable to produce a bag out of old clothes.
