LWC?Drinks Cornwall Cricket League round-up — Saturday,?September 1

WERRINGTON know that a maximum 20-point victory at home to Falmouth on Saturday (1pm) will see them claim their first ECB Cornwall Premier League title since 2015 despite losing by 45 runs to nearest challengers Penzance at Ladycross.

Paul Smith’s men went into the game 12 points ahead, and knew that even if they lost and picked up enough bonus points, they would still head go into the final weekend with the destination of the trophy firmly in their hands.

After winning a vital toss and choosing to field, the home side were once again thwarted by former Essex and Derbyshire all-rounder Greg Smith, who made 96 in their 213-9.

After coming together at 26-2 after Sam Hockin (3-27) had dismissed both openers, Smith and South African Dylan Blignaut (36) put on 80 for the third wicket before Blignaut was dismissed by off-spinner Adam Hodgson, who went on to finish with the fantastic figures of four for 35 off his ten overs.

From there on, Smith marshaled the tail before being caught by Tom Lyle off Tom Dinnis (2-40) in the last over.

All of the Werrington bowlers did well with Hodgson (4-35) and Ian Worsnip (0-28 off ten) the pick.

Disaster struck off the first ball of the chase as Matthew Robins was caught behind before Hodgson departed soon after for just five.

When Paul Smith went for 19 at 44-3, Penzance sensed their chance.

However, former skipper Ben Smeeth (48 off 106) and Mark Gribble (49 off 96) joined forces to put on 81 for the fourth wicket.

With the required run-rate escalating, Werrington decided to shut up shop and look to make 175 for an extra bonus point, and more importantly, deny Penzance the chance to pick up more bowling points.

In the end, they finished on 168-7 with Jono Baldock and Tom Dinnis unbeaten on 12 and three respectively.

That ensured that Penzance picked up 18 points with the home side securing seven, which means that going into the final round of fixtures, which sees Penzance entertain Callington and Werrington face Falmouth, the North Cornwall side are one point better off.

Callington confirmed their survival on Saturday with a nine-run victory over Camborne at Moores Park.

In a high-scoring thriller, Callington got off to a rapid start as captain Aidan Libby blasted 71 off just 50 balls in an opening partnership of 129 with Toby May, who made 40.

Despite losing both openers and Andrew Jones at 129, solid contributions from Joe White (22), Oliver Allsop (37no) and number nine Jim Shorten (27) meant they got up to 255-8.

In reply, Camborne collapsed to 45-4 before a sensational fightback meant they almost snatched it.

Sam Pooley (79) and Simon Hosking (59) led the way with half-centuries before the last pair of Nigel Endean and Giles Head put on 28 for the last wicket.

Spinners Harry Sawyers (2-34) and James Boundy (2-38) were the pick of the bowlers.

In County Division One, Launceston are officially safe after winning the local derby against Werrington seconds by four wickets at Lawhitton.

Werrington made 181 all out in 43.5 overs with skipper Mark Hodgson (37), Danny Warne (32) and Darren Johns (23) the only batsmen to pass twenty.

Five home bowlers took a wicket with Sam Pengelly (2-24), Robert Mutch (2-20) and Matt Davey (2-39) impressing while Michael Diebner inflicted two run-outs.

At 2-2, Launceston needed a partnership, and they got it as opener Michael Bolt blocked up an end to make 33 from 91 balls while Pengelly (44) and skipper Kevin Worth (55) played aggressively from the other end.

Hodgson kept the visitors in the game with three for 21 off his ten overs, but Mutch’s unbeaten 18 off just nine balls secured their fourth consecutive victory, and with it, County Division One cricket in 2019.

In Division Two East, Bude are guaranteed to finish as runners-up after hammering Callington seconds by 108 runs at Crooklets.

Thomas Hall carried his bat for 106 in a total of 301-2 which also saw sizeable contributions from Warren Rumble (42), Mark McManus (43) and Paul Williams (53no).

To their credit, Callington batted out the 45 overs to make 193-8 with Tom Neville (42) and Alex Robinson (41) the main contributors.

For Bude, Ryan Chalkley and Troy Buckingham picked up their first ever first team wickets while Andrew DeRosa collected three for 41.

After being up at the top for so long, Luckett could finish as low at fifth if results go against them on the final weekend after losing by five wickets at St Minver.

Openers Jonathan Hoskin (21) and Mark Brown (20) made a solid start for the Chapel Field club, but after that, a number of batsmen got in and out in a total of 156 all out.

For St Minver, Will Durrant cleaned up the tail to take four for ten while spinner Harry Hambly ended with three for 13 off his six overs.

The home reply got off to a solid start through Antony Ash (44) and Steve Hawke (19) before they were led home by Robert Hawken (35no) and Charlie Hawken (25). Five different bowlers were successful for Luckett.

South Petherwin confirmed a third-placed finish in Division Three East after a four-wicket victory over St Austell thirds in their final game of the season.

St Austell rattled up 216-7 with Andrew Yelland (3-34) and Phil Pridham (3-43) sharing six wickets before Adam Warne (77) and Taylor Gerry (28) put on a 103 stand for the first wicket.

From there on, Paul Clements (33), Roger Gerry (19) and Ian Clements (21) led them home.

Holsworthy endured a mixed weekend, which means they’re guaranteed to finish fourth in their first ever season in the division.

On Saturday they won by seven wickets at Duloe with Sam Stacey making an unbeaten 105 before they were bowled out for just 33 to lose by 152 runs at home to Wadebridge seconds on Sunday.

Tintagel will secure fifth-place if they pick up 16 points or better at Holsworthy on Saturday.

They beat St Neot by 29 runs at Butts Field after posting 235-6. Jordan Burnard top-scored with 81 before Ryan Pooley (3-34) and Ben Lane (2-41) shared five wickets.

Werrington thirds had their best weekend of a tough season after thrashing both Roche seconds and Gorran seconds.

On Saturday they beat Roche by nine wickets after Nick Oldaker took four for 19 to bowl the home side out for 100, before Sunday’s game saw them chase down 198 at home to Gorran for the loss of two wickets.

Oliver Bailey made 74 and Scott Taskis an unbeaten 73 after Nick Ward (4-23) had earlier snaffled four wickets.

In Division Four East, Launceston seconds require six points from their clash with fellow promotion hopefuls Bugle to secure the title after beating their Luckett counterparts by four wickets at the Chapel Field.

The home side made 155-8 off their 40 overs with Patrick Thompson top scoring with 45. David Cox (3-21) and Matthew Bloomfield (3-28) shared six wickets.

In reply, Mark Forshaw (44), Darren Jenkin (33) and David Sillifant (20) got the visitors into a strong position before a mini collapse ensued, which did not prove costly in the end. Youngster Joe Allen took three for 21.

Bude seconds’ three-wicket victory at Bugle means that a win over Newquay thirds at Crooklets on Saturday will ensure they are promoted.

The home side could only manage 120 all out with Gordon Wint taking four for 35 and Gary Moore two for 2-25.

The visitors struggled as well with the bat as they collapsed to 32-6. However, Wint (58) and Moore (25no) again combined to great effect to steer them over the line.

Delabole’s final home match of the season ended with a routine seven-wicket victory over Milton Abbot.

Jordan Blanchard took five for 21 as the visitors were all out for just 110 before they were led home by Drew Burnard’s unbeaten 59.

In Division Five East, Launceston thirds’ late bid for safety continued with an eight-wicket win over St Blazey seconds while Gunnislake’s tough season continued with a 185-run defeat at Wadebridge thirds.

South Petherwin’s fixtures in Division Six East have finished, although they’re awaiting to find out whether they have promotion play-off next weekend.
