Werrington v Callington
WERRINGTON rounded off a solid season with a local derby against visiting Callington, but it was the rain that proved the winner at Ladycross.
The home side were motoring along at 262-8 from 47 overs with Sri Lankan pro Thulina Dilshan not long out for a sublime 126, as Callington’s bowlers struggled with the wet ball.
Cally skipper Graham Wagg chose to field upon winning the toss with the aim to dismiss the hosts as quickly as possible.
That task started brilliantly as Werrington soon found themselves 14-3.
Sam Hockin was caught by Mohammed Danyaal off Ben Ellis for four before Danyaal (3-57) bowled John Moon for a five-ball duck.
Director of cricket Adam Hodgson did not last long as he edged Ellis (2-72) behind to Joe White for four, but from there on Werrington fought back, led by Dilshan’s brilliance.
The diminutive right-hander struck 17 fours and three sixes in his 106-ball stay which was only ended he picked out Aidan Libby in the 41st over off Danyaal with the score at 207-6.
Dilshan shared in stands of 97 with Mark Gribble and 47 with Ben Jenkin, both of whom departed to Wagg’s left-arm spin for 28 and 21 respectively.
Former captain Ben Smeeth made a sprightly 39 not out from just 41 deliveries, while captain Nick Lawson’s 22 from just 16 deliveries kept the runs coming.
However with the conditions worsening, umpires Roy Strout and David Higman took the players off and they never returned.
Werrington finished with a record of seven wins and nine losses from their 18 games with one cancelled completely.
Dilshan (593), Gribble (433) and Hodgson (430) all passed 400 runs with Hodgson also collecting 25 wickets with his off-spin.
