St Piran League East round-up
MORWENSTOW ran riot in the second-half as they beat struggling Callington Town Reserves 9-2.
However, the opening 45 minutes told a different story, with the visitors going ahead twice.
Callington scored first after a communication mix up in defence saw a hapless Arron Bailey put the ball into his own net from a floated free-kick. Soon after, Morwenstow equalised from a set piece of their own, as Will Bryant headed home from a corner.
The Marshmen then went ahead again after centre-back Mark Skelton was caught in possession, allowing Alex Jacob to run through and stroke the ball into the bottom corner. However, almost immediately after, Tom Denford latched onto a loose ball from a goal-mouth scramble to square the scoring once more. Top scorer, Norman Foster despatched a penalty to put the home team ahead before the break.
After the restart Morwenstow took no prisoners and scored two goals within as many minutes as half-time substitute Gavin Carter — returning from suspension — was too much to handle for Town’s defence. From the restart he ran the ball to the by-line to cut back to Foster for an easy finish. Carter then went on a mazy solo run to notch a goal himself, taking the game away from Callington.
Foster soon completed his hat-trick from another spot-kick to take his season tally to nine. The away team didn’t seem to have any response and without anyone to bring on from the bench, their tired legs began to show.
Gary Walter put the game to bed in emphatic style, completing a hat-trick of his own. Walter cooly finished off two crosses inside the box, before completing the scoring with a trademark free-kick.
The North Cornwall outfit make the long journey to Mousehole Reserves in the next round of the Kernow Stone League Cup on Saturday and Callington will hope to bounce-back as they welcome winless Wadebridge Town Reserves to Ginsters Marshfield Parc.
Launceston Reserves remain fourth in the table after a convincing 4-0 victory at strugglers Lanreath.
Despite missing a number of players through unavailability and first team call-ups, the Clarets led 2-0 at the break thanks to Mark Elvidge and Scott Sanders’ header.
With the visitors enjoying a strong wind behind them in the second-half, they continued to dominate and scored twice more, both from Kevin Hatch corners, which were converted by Alex Moore and Josh Harris.
Bude Town were held to a 0-0 draw at Liskeard Athletic Reserves. The Seasiders will now also be without star striker Scott Percy for the next few matches, after he was sent-off.
