HOLSWORTHY manager Ryan Hall admits his side’s recent three-match unbeaten run is a result of having ‘gone back to basics’.

The Magpies beat both Wadebridge Town and Truro City Reserves 1-0 before adding another clean sheet in a goalless draw with Penzance 13 days ago.

They were denied the chance to build on that momentum last weekend as their local derby with Bude Town fell foul of the weather for a second time.

Hall said: “It was desperately disappointing to have the game called off, but it was the correct decision, the pitch conditions were absolutely awful and in fairness it would have spoilt the game.

“The game is due to be played now on April 11, which should be better for both clubs and with it being a Friday night and the only game on, it should be a bumper crowd.”

Holsworthy started the season with a bang, racking up four wins from their first five outings before a poor patch which saw them win just once in 14 outings.

Hall admitted the turnaround has been down to a combination of factors.

He said: “Yes the run has been good, I think the start of the season heightened our egos probably beyond our level and we took our foot off of the gas and lost sight a bit on our target.

“That, coupled with key absences did hit us hard.

“Over recent weeks we have decided to go back to basics, become hard to beat and keep ourselves in games.”

Holsworthy’s combined goals for and against is the lowest in the league, although Hall believes they should have found the net far more.

He said: “We have in a lot of games created chances, probably as many as we have ever during my tenure, we just haven’t had that bit of luck and in some cases have just lacked a bit of composure.”

Hall has some goals for the final couple of months of the campaign, concluding: “As the season starts to draw to a close, we want to focus on cementing a mid-table position, progressing as far as we can in the Torridge Cup and to start giving some more opportunities to the younger players coming through from the thirds and second team.”

Holsworthy continue their campaign tomorrow when they visit top-four hopefuls Wendron United (3pm) before heading up to North Devon on Sunday to tackle Shamwickshire Rovers in the Torridge Cup quarter-final (2pm).
