AFTER four straight league defeats, Launceston will hope that the lure of the Buildbase FA Vase will inspire the Clarets for tomorrow’s showdown with unbeaten Western League Division One outfit Cheddar (3pm).
After three disappointing defeats at the hands of Wendron United, Saltash United and Falmouth Town in SWPL Premier West, Gary Jeffery’s men put in a much better display at St Austell on Tuesday night before falling to a late Chris Reski winner, and they’ll need to at least match that if they are to progress into the Second Qualifying Round and secure a home tie with either Tavistock or Hallen.
With Camelford given a bye in to the next stage and Holsworthy not entering, Callington Town are the other Post area club involved.
They travel to fellow SWPL Premier West side Porthleven, who have enjoyed a fine start to life at Step Six having been in Division One (West) last year, sitting seventh with 11 points from six games.
Cally have had a tough time so far, picking up just a point from their opening seven games, but like Launceston will hope to pull off a surprise.
Despite most Step Six clubs being in FA Vase action, there are still eight games in the SWPL.
In the Premier West, Camelford will look for a second win of the season when they welcome Wendron United to Trefrew Park. The Camels were unlucky to lose 3-2 at home to Bodmin Town on Tuesday night.
Holsworthy let slip a two-goal lead at Elburton Villa before falling to a 4-3 defeat at Haye Road on Tuesday also. But having won the two before that, Liam Dart’s side will be confident of getting back to winning ways when 16th-placed Honiton Town make the long trip to Upcott Field.
All four Post area clubs are in action in St Piran League East.
Bude Town have won both away games so far at Launceston Reserves and Wadebridge Town Reserves and will expect to make it a hat-trick when they go to winless Saltash Borough.
Morwenstow and Launceston Reserves couldn’t be separated in a 2-2 draw at Pennygillam on Tuesday night. The Greens are at home to second-placed Polperro, while Launceston make the trip down to their Millbrook counterparts.
Callington, fresh off their first win of the season on Tuesday at home to Saltash Borough, go to their St Dennis counterparts.
St Minver have enjoyed a perfect start to their East Cornwall Premier League campaign, having won all four so far with Steve Wootton scoring seven.
They will face a stern challenge though at Trewint Lane when third-placed Foxhole Stars visit.
North Petherwin lost for the first time last Saturday at home to leaders Mount Gould. They welcome Torpoint Athletic thirds.
St Teath welcome St Blazey to the Recreation Ground, looking for their first points at the third attempt.
North Cornwall sides Tintagel and St Breward begin their Duchy Premier League campaigns tomorrow.
Tintagel make the relatively short trip to AFC Bodmin while St Merryn are the visitors to Brake Parc.
Boscastle will look to bounce back from their opening day defeat at home to Stoke Climsland when they head to Saltash, while Gunnislake get underway by entertaining Holywell and Cubert.
Four Division Two clubs are in action, although Bude Town welcome near-neighbours Week St Mary in Group H of the newly-revamped Shoe Boy Duchy League Cup. They are joined by St Columb Major in a three-team group.
Elsewhere, Southgate Seniors — fresh off a 5-1 opening day victory over Lostwithiel Reserves, host St Stephen Reserves at the Launceston College Playing Fields, while Lifton Reserves start by welcoming St Eval Spitfires.
North Petherwin Reserves are the only Post area club in action in Division Four as they head down the A388 to St Ann’s Chapel.
Bradworthy will hope for their first points of the season when they welcome Shamwickshire Rovers to the Bradworthy Recreation Ground in the North Devon Premier, which got underway last week.
Holsworthy Reserves ran riot as they thrashed Torrington Reserves in Intermediate One. Tomorrow they make the short trip to Vinnicombe Park to tackle Bridgerule, who lost 3-2 at Bideford Community.
Kilkhampton make their seasonal bow when they welcome Barnstaple to Lamb Park.
Morwenstow Reserves will hope to bounce back from their 9-3 thrashing at Lynton when they go to Kingsley Wizards. Bridgerule Reserves — 3-1 winners at home to their Hartland Clovelly counterparts are on the road at Torridgeside thirds.
Ashwater and Bradworthy Reserves begin their Intermediate Three seasons tomorrow.
Ashwater, bottom last year, welcome Braunton fifths while Bradworthy go to Barnstaple FC Reserves.
Their were contrasting starts for Halwill’s men’s sides last week.
While an Andrew Wonnacott-inspired first team won 5-3 at Sandford in Division Two, the reserves came up just short as they lost 3-2 at home to Westexe Park Rangers in the league below.
This week the firsts are at home to Exeter-based Heavitree United while the reserves go to Winkleigh.
