Cornwall Cricket League Division Two East round-up – Saturday, August 31
BRETT Hunter took 6-37 as Bude ended Werrington Seconds’ title hopes with a three-wicket victory at Crooklets on Saturday.
Werrington headed to the north coast hoping for a favour from St Blazey, but it wasn’t forthcoming as St Austell secured a return to County Division One with a game to spare.
Bude thrashed the Ladycross outfit by ten wickets in the same fixture last summer, and the omens weren’t good early on as Hunter ripped through the visitors.
Bowling at good pace with his left-armers, Hunter single-handedly had Werrington 37-5 with four of his victims bowled.
James Turner bowled Tom Lyle for 14 to make it 66-6, but Werrington fought back as Rob Dymond, Jason Seldon and last man Nick Oldaker all made 20, while Tyler May was 18 not out in reaching 146 all out.
The Seasiders then slipped to 22-4 themselves as Oldaker (2-33) and Ian Searle (2-7 off 9) went to work, and when that became 58-6 with James Turner out for 19, Werrington were favourites.
But Matt Whitefield (39no) and Andrew De Rosa (35) dug in to earn Bude 19 points and give them a chance of finishing third.
To do that they will need St Blazey to beat St Minver on the final day after Alek Gill’s side edged past Callington Seconds by four runs at Menefreda Way.
St Minver made 217-7 with opener Ben Hawken and Kelvin Lockwood leading the way with 65 and 45 respectively. Dean Jeffery, who later starred with the ball, added 18 from just 12 balls at the end.
Callington’s attack was led by part-timer Blake Tancock with 4-36.
Cally eased to 87-0 with Ben Allsop hammering the bowling to all parts in his 59 from just 50 balls, and although James Brenton made 31 and Nick Parker 26, they slipped from 133-2 to 143-6.
The last four all reached double figures, but Jeffery (4-44) had Mohamed Durrani-Zubair caught by Ben Hawken to secure the contest.
South African Reece Thompson took 3-50 while spinners Alek Gill (2-31) and Rob Hawken (1-32) were tight.
Holsworthy continued their good end to the season with a five-wicket success over relegated Tintagel.
The visitors got off to a quick start through Tom Parsons and Akobe Earle.
Jordan Burnard (26) and Matt Jolliffe (21) got in without going on, but it was Jordan Blanchard’s unbeaten 68 that helped them reach 195-9.
Earle dismissed the in-form Jack Greening for a duck, but the game was over in less than 30 overs as Herschelle Poggenpoel showed his class.
The South African right-hander, who had earlier taken 4-12 from nine overs, made 111 not out as the Trees raced home.
However that doesn’t quite tell the tail as the hosts were 93-5.
But he found a useful ally in Dan Smith who held up one end for 19 not out as Poggenpoel blitzed the bowling to all parts.
South Petherwin will be in the new Division Three East next season, but they did round off their home campaign with a 37-run success over fellow strugglers Menheniot-Looe.
Opener Richard Watson carried on his fine form with 52, and with James Weeks (39) and Adrian Clements (35) both chipping in, they reached a competitive 197-8. Mike Maiden was the pick of the visiting attack with 4-29.
That didn’t look enough as openers Luke Ripley and Sam Jordan raced out of the blocks with a stand of 84, but once they were dismissed by Kev Horrell (2-49) in quick succession the innings nosedived to 160 all out.
Spinners Adrian Clements (3-21), Jacob Masters (1-26) and James Weeks (3-3) did the damage.
