SWPL PREMIER WEST (SATURDAY)
Newquay 3 Holsworthy 1
THE Magpies put in a much-improved performance at Mount Wise on Saturday, but it was the league leaders that showed why they are top of the table.
Holsworthy, who welcomed back Gavin Carter and Blake Shapland to the front three and Max McDonald at left-back, played against a strong wind in the first half and twice pressed home keeper Brodie Cole into action from distance through Blake Shapland and Sam Jago.
At the other end, Newquay struggled to create any real chances as the sides went in at 0-0.
But five minutes after the restart the Peppermints went in front when Cam Turner’s free-kick from 20 yards took a slight deflection and went in.
Soon after it was 2-0 when Lucas Potts’ shot took a helping hand off a defender and into the top corner.
Newquay added a third when Louis Price cut in off the flank, held off Jedd Peschke and rocketed a shot home from 12 yards.
The Magpies continued to graft and push the home side back with Aidan Slade, Jay Thomas and the front three of Shapland, Jago and Carter all working hard.
They got some reward with ten minutes to go when Thomas’ shot into the area landed at the feet of Peschke whose scuffed finish found the corner.
But despite applying some late pressure, it was Newquay who held on.
Holsworthy have a testing week ahead of them.
Wednesday night (October 9) sees them welcome high-flying Dobwalls (7.30pm), before Saturday’s SWPL League Cup home tie with Cullompton Rangers (3pm).
