INTERNATIONAL acclaim and praise from world champions, was what greeted North Devon Display Gymnastics Club when they performed at the 13th international Festival del Sole in Riccione, Italy last month.

The 25-strong team of gymnasts, many of whom come from around the Bude area, and range in age from seven to 22, represented Great Britain alongside gymnasts from all over the world including the South Korean and Japanese national gymnastics champions.

Despite an eventful start, due to a problem with the British Airways check-in system causing a ?ight delay, and lost luggage, the team took part in the opening ceremony including leading the GB ?ag into a packed arena.

With their action packed James Bond themed routine, the team wowed the crowds with thrilling tumbles, balances and dance sequences.

It wasn’t all about hard work as there was a bit of free time during the day for team bonding in one of the amazing resort pools, although they still found time for a bit of water style gymnastics.

The festival culminated in a ?nal performance on the main stage of the closing ceremony where the gymnasts performing to a crowd of over 5000 people (of all nationalities), provided an amazing atmosphere, with cheers and chants of encouragement for the British representatives.

Head Coach, Rattie Gordon, who organised the trip, said: “This has been an amazing experience for the gymnasts and a huge honour to represent their country doing the sport they love.

“They have done their club and their country proud, and I’m very proud of all the hard they have put in over the months of training.

“The community have also been an amazing support, helping us to raise funds, and donating towards the kit.”
