North Cornwall Table Tennis League round-up

CHAMPIONS North Hill continued their march towards defending their crown with a routine 10-0 victory at Crackington A last Thursday night.

They were rarely in trouble at Otterham Village Hall as the trio of Iain Oxenham, Shirley Luckhurst and Mike Briggs were all unbeaten.

On the same evening, second-placed Budehaven A racked up a 9-1 success over Budehaven B, although Nathan Jukes’ side could, and perhaps should, have won more.

Three of the singles matches went the distance but all went to the A team.Alistair Prades and David Sillifant overcame some tough encounters to be unbeaten all night while David Ewen beat Aleks Worth in four sets for the ‘home’ point.

The closest match of the week was on Tuesday as North Hill B ran out 6-4 winners at Stratton who saw Elyot Burnett secure a deserved hat-trick, including an impressive victory over Tau Manonge.

He also combined with Anth Ward to take the doubles, but it was the visitors who left with the victory thanks to doubles for Peter Frier, Jim Rickwood and Manonge.

Ward was unfortunate in losing two in deciders, while Ian Westaway was beaten 11-9 by Rickwood in the final match of the night.

Budehaven C saw off Budehaven D 6-4 despite an impressive treble from teenager Louis Konowalik.

But although David Shadrick saw off Ezra Jukes for a fourth point, Robin Worden and Keith McGarry both secured braces to go alongside wins from Jukes and in the doubles.

The other match saw North Hill C see off Bridgerule B 7-3.

Trevor Luckhurst was unbeaten all night with doubles coming from Karen Horrell and Ryan Taylor.

There were a handful of games in Division Three with wins for Bridgerule C and Budehaven E in the North Division and two for leaders Pensilva Aardvarks in the South league.
