Although a number of events due to be held over the weekend at Delabole Carnival were unable to go ahead after high winds damaged the marquee, the village battled on.

The marquee was left completely flat and emptied and in view of the continuing bad weather, the carnival procession was also cancelled.

However, this did not detract from the village’s fun week.

A Delabole Carnival Committee spokesperson said: “Wow what a week! Who would have thought it would have ended like this. Weather may have been against us this year but we will rise from the ashes and come back bigger in 2024. Despite a leaky tent we managed to entertain the community with Harry Peanut, A quiz, Magic, Bingo, A fantastic tribute act and of course Johnny Cowling.We would also like to thank all our food wagons who fed us well. It was lovely to see everyone, young and old enjoying the events but we are saddened that we couldn’t finish with our usual beer festival and parade.

“We would like to send out a huge thank you to everyone who has put time and effort in this week to support the committee because without your help the week would not be successful, and we are extremely grateful for the support from the community in our time of crisis on Friday morning it just shows us that we are all in it together and we thank you for that.

“We hope to be able to continue with our plans for 2024 but still need the support of the community. It can only happen with your help. Thank you again and look out for our fundraisers and a possible Funday within the next few weeks. So hold on to those homemade costumes and floats and keep practicing those dance moves because we still want to see them!”

The quiz was won by Sonic Death Monkey with Pengelly Posie coming in as runner up and The Inbetweeners winning the wooden spoon. 

The scarecrow competition winners were: 1st place Cornish pirate- Lynne Ellis, 2nd place Watch your Speed- Vanessa Gettings, 3rd place Lego Man- Louie and Charlie Taylor. Highly commended: Off to the Brit Awards- Kayleigh Gilbert
