To support their school-based education and broaden their understanding of the world, pupils at Whitstone School have been abroad enthusiastically enjoying experiences beyond the school-gate.

As part of their introduction to this term’s World War II history topic, pupils in Oak class visited the Blitz exhibition at Flambards Theme Park. Through realistic re-creations they experienced the sights and sounds of a bomb-blasted house, the claustrophobic interior of an Anderson shelter, were reminded of the brave men and women who served on the ‘home-front’ as fire-fighters and ARP wardens and how the NAAFI bolstered the morale of the troops and the civilian population whilst providing for their material needs. Pupils have been taking advantage of after-school surfing lessons at Widemouth Bay under the tutelage of coaches from Outdoor Adventure. Over the next few weeks, the children are eagerly looking forward to developing their ‘riding-the-waves’ skills. And what better location could there be in which to do so than the spectacular north Cornwall coast?

Not to be left out of such fun learning experiences, pupils in Seedling class ventured to Newquay zoo. Pupils returned to school brimming with excitement and full of information about the animals they had seen on their visit. In the popularity stakes, the mischievous meerkats were at the top of the list.
