Cornwall Cricket League Division Five and Six East round-up – Saturday, June 22
HOLSWORTHY Seconds recorded yet another win on Saturday as a fine bowling performance saw them earn a five-wicket success over St Austell Fourths at Stanhope Park.
St Austell were restricted to just 115-7 with Gavin Cockwill with 3-6 from six overs, while the promising Adam Lovejoy took 2-29.
Scott Bingham (33) and Ben Hutchings (19) got the score to 48-1 before four wickets fell for ten runs.
But Dan Marks and Daniel Lucas slowly knocked off the target, finishing on 27 and 17 respectively.
Gunnislake enjoyed a fine weekend to move level on points with Holsworthy and into second.
They beat Werrington Fourths on Saturday before a nailbiting one-wicket success at Roche on Sunday.
The Werrington game saw Gunni total 164 all out with Joe Organ (41), Dinesh Thirupuvanarajah (30) and Kevin Beare (26no) in the runs. Teenager Thomas Petherick took 4-38 from 8.2 overs.
Werrington got off to a great start in reaching 64-0 through the returning Nigel Dennis (41) and Matthew Gilmour (26), but once they were separated, wickets fell in a heap.
Of the rest, only Keith Moore with 26 from just 18 balls, reached double figures.
The Organ brothers – Joe (4-36) and Dean (3-43) – shared seven wickets while Kevin Beare chipped in with 3-7 from three overs.
Sunday’s encounter at Roche was a nailbiter.
The first half couldn’t have gone much better as Roche were dismissed for 128 with Ian Dawe (3-36), Joe Organ (2-20) and Kevin Beare (2-8) in the wickets.
The chase was a struggle as they slipped to 34-5 and 103-9.
But while Stephen Lees held up one end for a priceless 31, last man Ian Dawe made a run-a-ball 19 to get the job done.
Bude Seconds earned 18 points as they beat Bugle by 54 runs.
Once again it was the Seasiders’ top order that did most of the work as they posted 179-6.
Opener Michael Taylor made 83 with Charlie Gliddon (24) and Jack Miles (44) also contributing.
They then held Bugle to 125-8 with Gliddon taking 4-16 to add to his runs.
Fellow change bowlers Dan Petit (2-32) and Mike Taylor (2-37) did their bit while Paul Gliddon’s ten overs cost just 14.
One of the more bizarre games of cricket took place at South Petherwin on Saturday as their second team welcomed their Saltash St Stephens counterparts.
Petherwin were motoring along at 107-1 in the 18th over before the departure of Richard Watson for 13 sparked a collapse.
James Cawsey, who made 73 at a run a ball, departed with the score at 126-6, before they batted out their overs to finish on 143-9.
That proved decisive as Saltash remarkably lost just three wickets but still finished two short.
Chris Marsh faced 112 balls for 44 and although Duncan Nobes made 60 from 90, their departures left too much for the new men coming in despite just seven being needed from the final three overs.
Cawsey rounded off a fine day with 2-28 from nine overs.
Division Six East saw just three games go ahead with Menheniot-Looe Thirds and Lanhydrock Thirds both conceding to Launceston Thirds and Tintagel Seconds respectively.
Promotion hopefuls Luckett Seconds visited Newquay Fourths and earned an easy eight-wicket win.
Opening bowlers Gareth Clements (2-19) and Martin Budge (2-27) once again contributed, but it was skipper Steve Brown that was the main wicket-taker with 4-26. Alastair Skeet chipped in at the end with 2-13 as Newquay were dismissed for 129.
Opener Ian Roberts then carried his bat for 37 as they reached their target in the 22nd over.
There were also wins for leaders St Neot Seconds and Tideford Seconds over Boconnoc twos and St Stephen Thirds.
