CORNWALL COLTS LEAGUE SHIELD FINAL

Camborne 16 Bude 14

BUDE were edged out by just two points as they were beaten 16-14 by their Camborne counterparts at Truro College on Saturday.

The Seasiders had seen off Truro 21-19 the week before to reach the final but started as underdogs against a Camborne side that finished fifth in the table and had won the league fixture between the two 44-30.

The West Cornwall side started the game strongly with Bude having to defend hard, but they eventually broke through.

Shortly afterwards Bude gave away a penalty, close to the posts, which was slotted for 8-0.

Bude started to grow into the game, putting Camborne under pressure, with Bude scoring from a forward run from Charlie Firman, popping the ball to Oscar Davey, who scored in the corner, followed by a conversion from Albie Newton.

A second Cherry and Whites penalty extended the lead to 11-7, but Bude continued to put Cambourne under pressure and after they tried to clear their lines, it was charged down by Newton and hacked on, resulting in a try under the posts which he also converted for a half-time lead (14-11).

Bude started strongly in the second half, but were unable to turn pressure into points.

With eight minutes to go, Bude were still in front.

But after conceding a penalty on the opponents’ line, Camborne turned the screw and went up the other end to break the Seasiders’ hearts.

However, despite the setback, the future of the club is looking extremely bright.
