North Cornwall Table Tennis League latest round-up

CHAMPIONS North Hill A require just three points at nearest challengers Budehaven A on Thursday night to retain their title.

Both sides went into their penultimate fixtures wanting help from their respective B teams, but two whitewashes for the favourites mean North Hill sit six points clear.

North Hill visited Budehaven B and bar the last match of the night between David Ewen and Shirley Luckhurst, never seriously looked like losing a match despite teenage debutant Louis Konowalik winning a set against Mike Briggs.

Ewen, who had match points the week before against Luckhurst and lost, found himself two sets to one up.

However, the league’s chairperson held her nerve to ensure even more breathing space before the decider.

Budehaven A kept up their end of the bargain with a 10-0 success at North Hill B.

Alistair Prades was player of the match as he won all three without dropping a set, while David Sillifant wasn’t far behind, only losing one to Jim Rickwood.

Rickwood put in a fine performance against Nathan Jukes in their last match of the evening, but Jukes held on to win 11-9 in the decider.

Bridgerule A won 8-2 at Stratton to cement third.

Three matches went ahead in Division Two, all ending in 6-4 victories for the away side.

Altarnun B were at home twice, and despite Paul Burden securing trebles against both Altarnun A and North Hill C, they slipped to defeat.

Karen Horrell and Ryan Taylor both won twice for North Hill, as did the trio of Geoff Hale, Dave Jones and Jamie Sims for the Nuns.

Blisland kept up their title charge with a 6-4 success at Bridgerule B.

All six players won at least once, but visiting captain Chris Baverstock’s treble proved decisive.

They sit three points behind leaders Budehaven C who have a game in-hand.

In Division Three North, Bridgerule C and Budehaven F both won ahead of their title showdown this Thursday, while in the South, Pensilva A are champions having collected 46 points from a possible 60.

North Hill E can finish within five points if they win their final game.
